Celebrate Robotics at South County Library for National Robotics Week, Roanoke South County Library

Visitors are greeted by Pepper the Robot. Come talk with, and take selfies with, Pepper. The fun includes Robots and coding demonstrations, hands on exhibits with the robots and their humans. Featured robot platforms include: iRobot Create, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, MicroBits, Elegoo robots, Parallax BoEbot, Cosmo, Dash, Lego, and Dexter robots. Live hands on demos include First Lego League Robot teams from the local schools. Come dressed as your favorite robot.

Open Program 11PM -12PM: Arduino Programming made Easy:

  • Blinking LED Eyes and LED flickering candle light. This is a hands on C+ programming activity for everyone, aimed at first timers and beginners to Arduino.
  • A syllabus and take home solution document provided.
  • Limited Materials provided for the class by Roanoke Robotics & Makers Club and Noke Codes. Please feel free to bring your own PC, Arduino, 2 yellow and one red LEDs with 500 ohm resistors.

Students don’t have to attend the meeting to attend the program.

“Programming your Raspberry Pi Robots” at South County Library

Activities being planned:
10:00 - 11:15 am Mini-workshop: Introduction to the Raspberry Pi and Digital Making
11:30 am - 12:00 pm Demo: Raspberry Pi Robots & Projects
12:00 - 1:30 pm Lunch Break
1:45 - 4:00 pm Robotics Team Workshop - sign up with the library to be on one of the three GoPiGo Robotics Teams* and work hands-on with a Raspberry Pi Robot! * GoPiGo Classroom Kits will be provided. Connection with each robot car requires a WiFi connection using a supplied laptop for the workshop. Bringing your own laptop is optional.
GoPiGo robots will be provided to use for each coding session. Times to be done, no fees, but there will be a signup link posted to ensure there are materials for everyone. Workshop is limited to 15 participants.

Girl Power - 100 Girls of Code Workshop for Ages 8-14

We want to create an environment where girls can get together in a fun, collaborative environment to learn and share their love of technology with their peers.

FTC scrimmage and FLL Jr Expo

Join us at Roanoke College for a friendly FTC scrimmage on the afternoon of Saturday, April 28. Bring your FTC robot!

We will also be hosting an FLL Jr Expo.  Come and check out the great work done by our youngest FIRST teams, as they tell you about their "Aqua Adventure"!

If you've been thinking about starting an FLL Jr or FTC team next academic year, this would be a great opportunity to meet existing teams and coaches and learn a bit more what FIRST is all about.  We'll hope to see you there!

Location: Bast Gym, North Market Street, Salem, Roanoke College.
Park in Visitor or Faculty/Staff/Student parking in lot P7, which is the green P adjacent to building 12  (Bast) on the map.  Do not park in disabled or 24-hour reserved parking!

Schedule:
noon: FTC set-up time
12:30-1pm: FLL Jr check-in and set-up
1:00pm: Opening ceremonies
1:20-2:45: FLL Jr reviewing and open for public visitors (see below for exact schedule)
1:15-2:45: FTC scrimmage
1:15-2:45: Other robotics demonstrations and activities (including FLL)
3:00: Parade of teams, Closing ceremonies and awards

Services:
Several restaurants are within easy walking distance.  Vending machines for drinks are just outside the gym.  Please no food on the gym floor.

Mini Maker Faire

The Roanoke Mini Maker Faire will be held April 22, 2018, at the Science Museum of Western Virginia. This event, the brainchild of Tina Coffey and sponsored by the Museum and the Virginia Society for Technology in Education, will feature K-12 makers. Students from regional school divisions will demonstrate their maker expertise and provide hands on experiences for attendees.
